Founded in 1997, EMI is a non-religious organization under Congolese law, based in the Uvira Territory of South Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its creation was motivated by the sociopolitical turmoil during the 1996-1998 period and beyond in the Great Lakes region.
